HEDJAZ RAILWAY & LAWRENCE of ARABIA
In the days of the Ottoman Empire a railway was built from Damascus to Medina, it was known as the Pilgrim's Railway.
The purpose of this website is to:-

- map the railway from Damascus to Medina.
- show accurately the journeys made by T. E. Lawrence
At the end of the First World War and as a result of the Arab Revolt, the railway started to decline.
100 years later there are just a few sections left in operation. The vast majority of the line is slowly being lost, either back to the parts of the desert it traverses or to the needs of the population in urban development. There are also those who hunt for lost Ottoman gold and disturb archaeological sites.
Considering the ongoing disruption in some other parts of the region which are beyond control, it is important to record any data.
The respective Governments of Jordan and Saudi Arabia are keen to preserve some of the heritage the line and its history provide, not only for their own people but for the future potential of tourism.
